School Provision

The school also contains 7 unit classes which cater for children with Speech and Language difficulties and Communication difficulties.

Aims of Unit Provision

Speech and Language units provide an environment where up to 12 children are catered for in a class, with a teacher and classroom assistant. There is also a Speech and Language Therapist linked to each class. These therapists are employed by the Down Lisburn Trust, but are based on site at the school.

Social Communication units provide an environment where up to 6 children are catered for in each class, with a teacher, a classroom assistant and a general assistant.

There are a wide variety of communication problems catered for within the school including poor phonology, lack of expressive language, difficulty with understanding language and communication difficulties associated with Autistic Spectrum.

The units cover all areas of the curriculum, but have a strong emphasis on developing children's social communicative skills along with other speech and language difficulties- enabling the children to gain as much access to the national curriculum as possible.

Provision within these units aims to help children develop to their fullest potential, so that each can function in the education environment best suited to his or her ability and needs.  We aim to:

  • Foster each child's social, emotional and educational development.
  • Create a structured educational environment which is conducive to learning.
  • Help children to increase their confidence and self esteem by allowing them opportunites to experience success.
  • Set specific and realistic targets for each child.
  • Monitor progress continually and review progression on a regular basis.
  • Have regular encounters in different environments, through outings, to encourage social interaction and communication skills in and out of the classroom.
  • Integrate with their mainstream peers as regularly as possible.
  • Be included fully in the life of the school.
