Lots of fun learning!

An update on our Mummification Experiment!

When we scraped back the natron mixture and uncovered our tomatoes we observed changes to its size - it got smaller, its weight - it was lighter, its colour - it wasn’t as shiny and bright, its smell and texture - it wasn’t smooth any more - it was all wrinkly!

We thought about why this might be.

We know that tomatoes rot if left out in the kitchen for too long, this is because bacteria start to multiply and break down the tomato. Mummification preserves the tomato by stopping the bacteria. Bacteria like to live in wet conditions. So we think that by removing the ‘organs’ or inside of our tomato, we took away a lot of the wet or moisture that the bacteria would need to break down the tomato. The natron also helped by absorbing all the water from the tomato and making it harder for bacteria to live. This made the tomato lighter, dried up and a bit wrinkly though!

We took part in an online art lesson, as part of Children’s Mental Health Week.

We’ve had SO much fun at Airtastic on our Shared Education Trip…

We enjoyed yummy pancakes on Pancake Tuesday

We took part in an online workshop The United Way with The Manchester United Foundation, as part of NI Science Festival…

We had lots of fun in P5 playing Maths Games on NSPCC Number Day!

SAFER INTERNET DAY 2026!

We took part in Safer Internet Day - in class we thought about Artificial Intelligence or AI. We explored smart technology and making safe and responsible choices, especially uses of AI including chatbots.

We all use technology and the internet in different ways. We thought about how some people use technology is okay - such as using it in a way that is safe, kind, responsible and fun. However, we know there are some uses of technology that are not okay - such as using it to hurt someone, upset someone or trick someone, or in an unsafe way.  We had a quiz and then we moved to different areas of the room to show our decision of whether different ways of using technology or AI was okay, not okay or it depends. We had to explain why we made our choice. We also attended a whole school assembly on Safer Internet Day led by Miss Derby.

Hard at work planning and making our own ‘touch and feel’ books on ‘Book Creator’. We are then going to print them and stick materials on to them to match the tactile adjectives we thought of. We will then go and read them to P1.

We played ‘Materials TABOO’ as a Talking & Listening skills activity linked to our World Around Us topic. It was a very close game but the boys won the decider question!

We went on a learning walk as part of our ‘Materials’ topic. We looked at lots of items around our school and thought about what materials they were made from and any alternative materials they could be made from.

As part of our ‘Materials’ topic we played the ‘feely bag’ game…were you had to feel for an item in the bag and describe what material you thought it was made from, any properties of it and if you could, guess the item! It was good fun!

We wrote our own Smartie Adjective Poems!

ICT…We took part in an Adobe Live Lesson for ENERGY SAVING WEEK. We created our own video presentations on Tips To Save Energy or Top Tips for Keeping Warm!

ACCELERATED READER! We are trying to improve our reading and comprehension skills by reading books of our own interest and then quizzing on them on the Accelerated Reader Program. We have set ourselves a personal word target and are working hard to meet this!

HONESTY

We have been focussing on our whole school value for this half-term, honesty.

We thought about the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf and the moral of this story. We then did a little comprehension activity based on it.

We have been very busy doing some Winter symmetry work in Topic Maths…

Christmas Maths Problem Solving and making Factor Christmas Trees…

We had lots of fun at the Festive Duck Derby on Christmas Jumper Day!

RESPONSIBILITY - is one of our school values.

We have been thinking about what our rights and responsibilities are.

We have been learning that it is our responsibility to speak up and to not be a bystander if we see bullying happening. We can be an up stander and stop bullying - this is using our Power for Good, the theme of Anti-bullying Week this year!

We are all different and unique and that’s something to celebrate…there is no-one else quite like you!

In ICT we have had lots of fun using J2Create to complete our ‘Who Am I?’ task. We had to take a photograph and then create a disguise of ourself and write three clues to help identify who am I?

Resilience - we had to have lots of resilience, one of our school values, to stick at this task and not to give up as it was tricky! We persevered and we did it!

Circuit Training in P.E….shuttle runs, squats, mountain climbers, press-ups, sit-ups and side crunches, skipping and more - all to help us develop our fitness, set new P.B.s and develop the skills of a good sportsperson.

Great work everyone!

Responsibility…at assembly we thought about one of our school values - RESPONSIBILITY- our rights and responsibilities within school.

ROALD DAHL DAY 2025!

We celebrated Roald Dahl Day with cake, splendiferous spelling games, hunting for a golden ticket, Roald Dahl science, problem solving and we even managed to squeeze in a Roald Dahl movie!

Willy Wonka wants to make HUGE sweets!

We carried out an experiment to determine the best solution for Willy Wonka to soak his sweets in to make them bigger…we used lots of science skills to follow a plan, do and then review our experiment.

ME Bags!

We created our ‘ME Bags’ with items that tell about us and our interests. We then enjoyed sharing these with the class during Talking & Listening in Literacy.  We learnt lots about each other!
