Safe in the sun

3 September 2023 (by Mr Deery (SPL4))

Dear Parent/Carer,

Ref: Safe in the Sun

I write once again to remind our school community about safety in the sun. With hot weather forecast for this week I would kindly seek your support to keep students safe from the sun.

On very sunny days, we are not in a position to offer the protection of shade to every child, so it is incredibly important that children bring a sun hat, sunglasses and water to school every day this week. We also ask that all children wear sun cream to school which is applied before they leave home in the morning.

We are going to encourage the children to re-apply some lotion to key areas before going outdoors. This will be for their face, neck and arms.

This is not replacing thefirst full application of the day which is put on at home, we will not be able to do this in school. Could we politely request that the children practise this at home before coming to school. To enable staff to keep your child safe in the sun, please send into school a bottle of sun cream clearly labelled with your child's name.

Please note that the school will not be able to provide sun cream to students.

Our main aim is to educate the children about sun safety and the importance of re-applying sun cream during the day. We will also look at promoting other ways to stay safe, for example: wearing sun hats, sunglasses, drinking water (carrying extra water bottles) and staying in the shade. Our children's safety is very important to us and working together we can make sure they are all protected when out in the sunny weather.

I thank you in advance for your co-operation and support.

Kindest Regards,

W Smyth

Vice-Principal.
