World Around Us

The World Around Us constitutes a vital Area of Learning within the primary curriculum, fostering children's innate curiosity and addressing their inquiries about the world through the lenses of Geography, History, and Science and Technology.

Teachers are tasked with facilitating children's acquisition of knowledge, understanding, and skills across four interrelated strands:

  1. Interdependence
  2. Place
  3. Movement and Energy
  4. Change Over Time

Embracing an inquiry-based methodology, The World Around Us encourages active exploration and discovery. It is essential for children to engage in diverse and balanced experiences encompassing the three statutory contributory elements of Geography, History, and Science and Technology.

An update on our Mummification Experiment!

When we scraped back the natron mixture and uncovered our tomatoes we observed changes to its size - it got smaller, its weight - it was lighter, its colour - it wasn’t as shiny and bright, its smell and texture - it wasn’t smooth any more - it was all wrinkly!

We thought about why this might be.

We know that tomatoes rot if left out in the kitchen for too long, this is because bacteria start to multiply and break down the tomato. Mummification preserves the tomato by stopping the bacteria. Bacteria like to live in wet conditions. So we think that by removing the ‘organs’ or inside of our tomato, we took away a lot of the wet or moisture that the bacteria would need to break down the tomato. The natron also helped by absorbing all the water from the tomato and making it harder for bacteria to live. This made the tomato lighter, dried up and a bit wrinkly though!

We took part in a live lesson with the Manchester United Foundation as part of the NI Science Festival…

ICT…We took part in an Adobe Live Lesson for ENERGY SAVING WEEK. We created our own video presentations on Tips To Save Energy or Top Tips for Keeping Warm!

Material TABOO Game!
We had lots of fun using our talking and listening skills to play this Material Taboo Game. It was a very close game which went to a tie break which the boys won!

 Material Feely Bag Fun!

We had to describe the material we could feel in the box by describing the properties of the material that we could feel. We then got to guess the material the object was made from and got a bonus point if we could identify the object by touch!

We went on a learning walk to hunt for various items around school and record what materials they are made from. We then thought about wgat alternative materials they could be
